To inspire designers to explore what they can achieve with digital inkjet technology, we worked with Dots + Pixels to create a mini magazine that features elements from grassroots, handmade zine culture.

Big inspiration, small package

Dots + Pixels has established itself as the online gathering place for digital inkjet designers and print professionals to learn about digital inkjet best practices and find inspiration for their next project. Dots + Pixels wanted to create a print piece that demonstrated how digital inkjet can help designers create something with a unique, one-of-a-kind feel in a cost-effective, efficient manner. With the theme of you did what with inkjet?, we designed what we call a mini mag to showcase how big inspiration can come in small packages.

The mini mag incorporates unique typography and the illusion of mixed media — both of which are fixtures in zine culture — to highlight that you really can do anything with digital inkjet.

We did what with inkjet?!

Large blocks of color and halftones help simulate screenprinting, and the use of whimsical icons and bold colors aligns with the Dots + Pixels brand and website. The content of the mini mag includes a how-to article for creating quick response (QR) codes Adobe InDesign, tips and techniques for common design tasks like color matching, and a glossary of digital inkjet terminology.

The size of the mini mag also helps set it apart. The piece can easily sit on a designer’s desk or be taken on-the-go while still providing helpful, in-depth content on how designers can use digital inkjet technology to create showstopping print, regardless of the application.

My goal for the mini mag was to create something that could sit on a designer’s desk that would be visually stimulating and educational. I wanted it to be a piece that could easily be picked up and leafed through and actually used…something like a reference book that a designer can flip through pretty easily to find the information they need.
